In this novel account of global citizenship, Luis Cabrera argues that all individuals have a global duty to contribute directly to human rights protections and to promote rights-enhancing political integration between states. The Practice of Global Citizenship blends careful moral argument with compelling narratives from field research among unauthorized immigrants, activists seeking to protect their rights, and the 'Minuteman' activists striving to keep them out. Immigrant-rights activists, especially those conducting humanitarian patrols for border-crossers stranded in the brutal Arizona desert, (...) are shown as embodying aspects of global citizenship. Unauthorized immigrants themselves are shown to be enacting a form of global 'civil' disobedience, claiming the economic rights central to the emerging global normative charter while challenging the restrictive membership regimes that are the norm in the current global system. In recent years, some scholars and prominent political figures have advocated the deepening of North American integration on roughly the European Union model, including the creation of new political institutions and the free movement of workers across borders. The construction of such a North American Union, if it included even a very thin trans-state citizenship regime, could represent the most significant expansion of individual entitlements in the region since citizenship was extended to former slaves in the United States. With such (...) a possibility as its starting point, this article explores some striking parallels between the mass, legally prohibited movement across boundaries by fugitive slaves in the pre-Civil War period, and that by current unauthorized migrants to the United States. Both were, or are, met on their journeys by historically parallel groups of would-be helpers and hinderers. Their unauthorized movements in both periods serve as important signals of incomplete entitlements or institutional protections. Most crucially, moral arguments for extending fuller entitlements to both groups are shown here to be less distinct than may be prima facie evident, reinforcing the case for expanding and deepening the regional membership regime. El presente artículo ofrece una perspectiva personal y singular sobre la actualidad intelectual de la fenomenología. Dentro de este marco se rescatan y subrayan algunos motivos centrales que originaron la fenomenología y sobre los cuales se funda. En función de dichas motivaciones, se la presenta como descripción de lo propio, de la propia experiencia, para ulteriormente extraer de allí una consecuencia fundamental: escribir en nombre propio, más allá de las referencias bibliográficas y de remisiones a autores o pensadores determinados. A (...) partir de esto, el análisis muestra la articulación de la descripción de lo propio con la escritura de o desde lo propio, y la responsabilidad que aquí se hace patente y que conlleva el pensar fenomenológico. De este modo, se abre un ámbito que, más allá de la descripción, comporta asimismo un intento de exceder lo dado para adentrarse en lo por-venir y en las perspectivas que conducen a pensar lo posible. Por último, se aborda brevemente el tema del lenguaje propio, en este caso concreto, el español, y su relación con los idiomas académicos institucionalizados internacionalmente, formulando algunas preguntas sobre la relación entre la producción en fenomenología y su escritura en español. Deontological internalism is the family of views where justification is a positive deontological appraisal of someone's epistemic agency: S is justified, that is, when S is blameless, praiseworthy, or responsible in believing that p. Brian Weatherson discusses very briefly how a plausible principle of ampliative transmission reveals a worry for versions of deontological internalism formulated in terms of epistemic blame. Weatherson denies, however, that similar principles reveal similar worries for other versions. I disagree. The objective of this study has been to establish the level of significance that Gustavo Gutierrez and Juan Luis Segundo attribute to politics in their contributions to liberation theology and to extract the relevant consequences for political theory. ;A systematic analysis of the theory of history in the works of these two authors indicates a higher level of integration between Christianity and politics that is usual in Christian political thought. Liberation is equated with salvation and political liberation is seen (...) as one of its components. This brings politics to a position of privilege. When at the service of justice it occupies, for our authors, a high rank among Christian concerns and when devoted to oppression it requires diligent response from every Christian. ;This understanding of politics is valuable in that it accentuates the political aspect of the Christian theory of history, an element frequently underestimated. Certain tensions remain, however, in the theory as a result of this emphasis: between the moral improvement expected from the involvement in political activities conducive to justice and the moral ambiguity of political structures emerging from such activity; and between the use of the concept of class struggle and notions of conversion and reconciliation. Finally, there is the danger of reducing the critical ability of Christians regarding a particular political project by identifying it with the concept of eschatology. (shrink)

The presence of ibuprofen in wastewater is a topic of global interest, and the mechanisms and behavior of its correlation with its elimination in ecological systems, such as constructed wetlands, is a little known topic. The objective of this study was to perform a correlational analysis of the behavior of the emerging contaminant ibuprofen in a horizontally constructed wetland in a tropical climate planted with the ornamental plant Spathiphyllum blandum. 10 experimental units were used at the mesocosm level of 20 (...) L, 5 planted with Spathiphyllum B., and 5 without plants. The elimination of ibuprofen was measured and the correlation was analyzed using computational methods and neural networks. Spathiphyllum blandum was used in this study. The removal of ibuprofen in HC was significantly improved by up to 23% compared with that in non-planted systems. Based on the prediction obtained from ibuprofen in the effluent, it can be concluded that it has an exponential decay behavior tending to zero, and the model obtained explains in an acceptable way the relationship between the height of the plant and the concentration of ibuprofen in the effluent, reaffirming that this relationship is inverse. Further studies should be conducted to understand the behavior of these compounds in relation to different species of tropical plants. (shrink)

El presente artículo recupera los argumentos de Agamben respecto del infundamento del derecho, la violencia que le es intrínseca y la centralidad de la ficción en los dos primeros volúmenes de Homo sacer, _El poder soberano y la nuda vida_, _Estado de excepción_. A su vez, estudia la potencia diagnóstica de la apropiación que hace Agamben de las tesis de Schmitt, así como la crítica que despliega a sus límites teóricos desde Benjamin.

O autor estuda a noção de liberdade como milagre privado, segundo Leibniz. O homem é capaz de milagres, isto é, ser-se humano é ser-se capaz de liberdade. A vontade livre está sempre inclinada e essa inclinação é justamente a marca da sua indiferença. Nenhuma lei vincula o humano, e por isso é capaz de ser excepcional e de se soltar das amarras que o escravizam às coisas exteriores. A mente humana é capaz de produzir o imprevisível. O humano é, por (...) princípio, capaz de se assenhorear de si e de se determinar ao que de melhor lhe é possível, ainda que na maioria das vezes se deixe afundar no mar das paixões. (shrink)

A Teoria da Ação Comunicativa resulta de uma investigação acerca dos fundamentos da racionalidade prática, desenvolvida por Habermas nos últimos 30 anos. Neste artigo, serão analisados os aspectos básicos desta teoria, com ênfase nos pontos que a referenciam como modelo explanatório das nossas práticas comunicativas. Pretendo discutir prioritariamente a tese segundo a qual nossas condutas linguísticas são conduzidas por compromissos pragmático-universais. A aceitação desta tese depende da possibilidade de explicitação dos compromissos determinantes das ações comunicativas válidas. Com base neste exame, (...) vou propor a discussão de alguns pontos que me parecem mais frágeis na teoria de Habermas. Finalmente, pretendo contrastar este programa de reconstrução racional da comunicação com modelos teóricos pragmáticos não alinhados a priori com premissas racionalistas. Concluirei, a partir daí, que o argumento central de Habermas se fragiliza quando aplicado ás condições multilaterais e difusas nas quais os usos da linguagem efetivamente ocorrem. (shrink)

En este trabajo nos proponemos dar cuenta del significado que tienen en el pensamiento de Giorgio Colli los términos interioridad y expresión. La hipótesis es que dichos términos operan como bisagras de toda su filosofía, lo que le permite, en lo fundamental, replantearse la cuestión de la sabiduría griega en tanto modo de criticar las pretensiones de la «razón constructiva» moderna, abogando por el desarrollo de una «razón sana» sostenida en un nihilismo teórico afirmativo.
